I had been gone 3 days and got a call from Doris. She was hysterical and crying and said you and your sister were gone. A sheriff and some other people came in and took you and everything that belonged to you except your baby crosses, rings and a diaper pin.

Talk about panic. First I thought your Dad kidnapped you, then remembered it couldn't have been him. He had no idea where we were. Then she told me I had to go to the Peoria police station because there was a warrant for my arrest. You have no idea how scared I was. I didn't know what I had done, where you were and what was happening to us. I got to the police station and was told to see some officer. I asked what the charges were and he told me, they were informed I was carrying a concealed weapon and using and selling dope. I told him the only thing I smoke is cigarettes and there seemed to be quite a few in the office that had some lite.

At that time I didn't even know what dope was. A gun? I'm scared to death of guns. He laughed and said someone must have been misinformed. I was free to go. I asked where I could pick you up and he said Catholic Social Services. Whew, I thought everything was settled. Wrong! I was ushered into a priest's office, told him who I was and was there to pick you up. I was told to sit down. Then I was informed he wouldn't tell me where you were until I signed the papers. If I didn't sign you would be left in the orphanage and I would go to jail. Orphanage? What orphanage? Where? My babies? I almost fainted.
